Seriously? Is there any better cure for that hungover feeling than a Bloody Mary?

So what better way to cap off this long holiday weekend of drinking, despair and debauchery than with a lil’ hair of the dog that bit you?

That’s right folks today is Red Monday… The day we alcoholics celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Bloody Mary!

The drink (which is an American institution) originated in Manhattan by a famous French bartender named Ferdinand Petiot when he came to the states in 1933. Today, New York State and local officials will proclaim Bloody Mary Day and honor the granddaughter of Petiot with a citation and a Bloody Mary toast in the middle of Times Square at 1552 Broadway.

The cocktail was originally called the Red Snapper because the term bloody was considered harsh for a drink in the 1930s. When Tabasco sauce was added to the drink the name Bloody Mary became a household word.

If you’ve never had a Bloody Mary

Well… Two things come to mind. A) Shame on you! and 2) You’re probably not old enough to be reading this blog, so run along now junior… The grown ups are talking… Since you’re still here I’ll assume you are of legal drinking age and wish to mend the error of your ways and partake of this elixir of the gods… For you gentle reader I offer…

The Perfect Bloody Mary

  • 2 oz Ketel One vodka
  • 3 oz tomato juice
  • 1/2 oz lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 5 drops Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 drops Tabasco sauce
  • 1 dash celery salt
  • freshly ground pepper (to taste)

Combine all ingredients in a pint glass filled with crushed ice. Stir gently. Garnish with slice of celery. Imbibe… Repeat, and repeat, and repeat until all of the vodka is gone or you can’t remember that you are going to die old and alone with a half dead houseplant as your only companion.

I’m just sayin’…

  1. I am now craving Vodka and it’s only 9:00 in the morning. And your not going to die alone like a houseplant, cheer up baby…things could be much worse.

  2. The Girl I Would Bring Home for the Holidays… That’s what I’m here for! To get you drunk and take advantage of you!

  3. When I was in the Army in Thailand, we used to mix beer and tomato juice half and half to produce the eye opening Kotex Cocktail.

  4. Awwwwwww, now that sounds like a lot more fun than what I’m doing now ! Not to mention your great for my ego ♥

  5. Mother… I think that’s a Canadian thing. Quite a few Canucks drink their beer with tomato juice.

  6. The Girl Who’s Ego I Stroke… I’m glad I could be of service my sweet.

  7. I can’t even get out of bed in the morning without my A.M. elixir, which reminds me… I forgot to leave the door unlocked before I went to bed so somebody, anybody, could fix my drink tomorrow morning.

  8. Nanny… If I didn’t know better I would say that sounded like an invitation. Honestly, even if it wasn’t… That’s how I’m taking it. LOL!

  9. I have never had a bloody mary and I don’t want to grow up so there!
It does sound delicious though. With a side of tequila mmmmmm.

  10. Bee… There is literally nothing better to wash down a piping hot bowl of homemade split pea soup than a couple three bloody marys… Trust me on this one. You won’t regret it.

  11. I LOVE bloody marys and your recipe sounded so good that I make myself one. Only I also pop a couple of olives and a stalk of celery in mine. AND Dailys makes a fantastic mix that includes the lemon juice (a MUST) and it’s kinda hot. It’s not their usual mix. Also, don’t get psyched out if you now start poopin’ red a few times. I’m just sayin’.

  12. Dana… I don’t get psyched out by that… I look forward to it. It adds a lil’ variety to my life… Mixes things up a bit!
